HelloWallet Web & Mobile Apps

Company: HelloWallet (2010-2015)
Role: Director of UX, Lead Product Designer, Lead UI Engineer, Data Visualization Design

Introduction

HelloWallet was a SaaS product that gave you a full picture of your financial world. You can link the app to your bank accounts, investments, and credit cards.

Because we knew a users balances and transactions, we were able to create a product that would automatically recommend a budget plus track spending in real-time against that budget. Even more importantly, this data would give a customized guidance path to help users achieve financial goals.

Below is a screenshot of the kind of look and feel that we evolved to around 2013, and the original design from 2011.

The original version of HelloWallet that a former designer created needed a drastic facelift. Especially during the “Web2.0” design revolution. This is just one of many iterations that I designed to get a good look and feel for that era, and it ended up being the one the company went with.

In late 2012 we hired a Head of Design on the marketing team that worked with a firm to develop an entire new brand for us. Her and I worked together with our teams to come up with a new look and feel for the HelloWallet application.

For the UX Teams part, the biggest UX improvements that our users wanted form us were…

  1. Realtime information like recent transactions were more valuable than a static “feed”.

  2. Summarize the current status of the budget, which was the main driver for spending guidance.

  3. Show the current financial goal that was being worked on.

  4. Motivate users by juxtaposing a particular financial goal to what it would lead to in real life (use photography to remind the user what they were working for).

  5. Tell the user what has changed since the last time they logged in.

This was the design that ended up winning a Webby Award in 2013, and was nominated again in 2015

HelloWallet Mobile App (iOS)

We designed the original GTM mobile application back in 2011 – 4 years after the launch of the iPhone. This application was designed using the latest web trends at the time (as you can see 😉). By the time 2013 came around, Apple drastically changed their design system and UI language. We followed those guidelines to update the mobile application to a more modern design.
